Dear Delaware Township Residents –
The Township Committee recently approved an annual Resolution declaring September 29, 2019 Childhood Cancer Awareness Day in Delaware Township. This letter is to get the word out to as many residents as possible about the two events that will mark that day to raise awareness and support, as well as honoring two children from our community.
The families of Mackenzie Wright and Rayanna Marrero have turned their personal loss into efforts help others not go through what they have in losing a child to cancer. Please mark your calendar now for the two events on September 29th which both help in the cause of fighting childhood cancer. The information and links for both are listed below:
- The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia Parkway Walk and Run – The Hopes and Dreams for Mackenzie Team will have both walkers and runners in this event that gives participants the chance to enjoy either a 2K Walk or a 5K run through Philadelphia on a September Sunday morning. Among thousands of others, you will take part in supporting children fighting cancer, as well as remembering those who have succumbed to this dreaded disease. The Hopes and Dreams for Mackenzie Team will have your fellow Delaware Township residents there to remember Mackenzie Wright, who passed away in 2010 after a courageous battle against Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma. Information on joining or supporting this team can be found here:
- The St. Baldrick’s Headshaving Event and Auction – Will be held from 12-5 PM at the Sergeantsville Volunteer Fire Company hosted by the Rays of Hope Team in honor of Rayanna Marrero who lost her valiant fight against Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2012. You can stop by this event for a while to cheer on the participants (including members of the Delaware Township School faculty, Sergeantsville Fire Company, Township Committee and more neighbors) as they get their heads shaved to support the efforts in fighting childhood cancers. There is also an auction with some great items to be had and you can grab a burger or hot dog at the lunch counter with all proceeds going to St. Baldrick’s as well! Information on this event can be found here:
These families have each suffered an unbearable sacrifice in the War on Cancer. Rather than giving up hope in their loss, they have become advocates for the next children and families who will face this diagnosis, and to help researchers develop treatments and cures for children. Please do whatever you can to help support these two amazing local events and remember our friends Mackenzie and Rayanna.
